Should you make your Ebay feedback private?

The open business model of Ebay has many pros and cons. One one hand if you think another seller is doing well and found a profitable niche, you can easily do a little research on ebay and through external Ebay tools to find exactly how that seller is running their business. On the other hand, if you’re that seller that found a cash cow, there is not much you can do about people stealing your business ideas.

When I first started on Ebay, I imported a new product from china for about $1.o0 per item. I was selling them on Ebay for around $20.00… Within 3 months the price dropped to about $5.00 per item from all the competition. I’m 100% sure it was from the ability of other sellers to see what I was selling and how well it sold!

one way to combat people doing research on your Ebay business is to make your feedback private. You will still be able to see all your feedbacks, but buyers and sellers won’t be able to see what product each feedback was issued for.

As you can see, you still get the benefit of positive Ebay feedbacks, but people can’t see that you sell one item more then others.

Private feedback also helps if you have high priced products and very low priced products. For example, if you sell a digital product for 99 cents, and sell a lot of them, you will get a ton of feedbacks which in turn makes your high end products look like they sell better.

There are two types of private feedbacks.

  1. full user account privacy – with this option you cannot sell items on ebay. You can only buy items. Your feedback will not bepublic at all, but the public can still see your over all feedback score.
  2. private listings – this helps keep your buyers anonymous and helps protect your business. The public can still see your feedback, but cannot see what item was purchased. This is the level of privacy you want.

To create a private listing, select the “Private listing” check box in the Choose how you’d like to sell your item section of the Sell Your Item form.
